Let Orange County Pain Clinics help with Sacroiliac Joint Pain.

Your sacroiliac joint is located at the base of your spine, where the pelvic bones and spine meet. This joint is not responsible for much of your body’s movement, but it can cause a lot of pain when it is inflamed due to its many nerve endings. Also known as sacroiliac joint dysfunction, sacroiliac (SI) joint pain is typically felt in your lower back.

  • Sometimes it is also felt in your thigh or lower leg.
  • You might notice that the pain radiates down one of your legs, or that your back feels stiff.

What are the causes of SI joint pain?

SI joint pain occurs when the joint becomes inflamed or strained. This can happen as a result of trauma, injury, or degeneration. It can also be caused by osteoarthritis or a stress fracture. You are at a greater risk of developing SI joint pain if you participate in work or other activities that involve improper lifting or the bending and twisting of your back.

How is it treated?

SI joint pain can be managed in a few ways. Your doctor might choose to inject the joint with a steroid to reduce inflammation. Radiofrequency ablation, which heats the nerve tissue in order to prevent the transmission of pain signals, can also be used.
